This article published on February 16, 2021 by the newspaper “IL GIORNO” highlights the problems emerged in the healthcare system during the Covid health emergency. Several opportunities have arisen from the difficulties encountered on the medical front, especially for telemedicine.
How does Telemedicine support remote health monitoring?
To illustrate the support provided by Telemedicine during the Covid emergency, let’s look at the example of Legnano hospital in Italy, where they applied two different strategies to strengthen remote health monitoring of patients who contracted Covid:
- Phone monitoring: interview with the patient to inquire about the patient’s health status.
- Telemonitoring: delivery to the patient of a smartphone and proper devices (saturation meter, thermometer, blood pressure and respiratory rate meter) for real-time transmission of parameters.
Are patients satisfied with the care they are getting?
Patient satisfaction is high with this new way of monitoring their health and they report feeling “closer” to the specialist.
Conclusions
The pandemic showed the potential for telemedicine to change the doctor-patient relationship and empower the healthcare system.
